Celebrating 46 Years of Comfort Food & Community

Smithfield’s food scene is full of long-standing favorites and local gems—and The Chicken Barn is both. Known for its cozy atmosphere and comfort food classics, this family-run spot has been serving the community for nearly 50 years. We had the chance to sit down with owner Denise Johnson, who shared the story behind this beloved restaurant and what keeps generations of locals coming back.

Can you share the story behind The Chicken Barn? How did it all begin?

The Chicken Barn started as a dream shared by my first husband, Tommy Hill. Tommy worked as a manager for a popular chicken chain and noticed a gap in the Smithfield area for places that served fried chicken. He saw an opportunity and, being the driven and passionate young man he was at just 19 years old, decided to take a leap of faith and open his own restaurant. He wanted to create a place that brought people together over great food. Our original location was just a block away from where we are now, and from the very beginning, Tommy’s vision for The Chicken Barn was about more than just food—it was about building a community. His legacy lives on in everything we do, and now, with my husband Randy by my side, we continue to carry forward Tommy’s passion and dedication.

What do you think sets The Chicken Barn apart from other eateries in Smithfield?

What makes The Chicken Barn truly special is that we’re family-owned and operated. This isn’t just a business; it’s a way of life for us. Over the years, our family has grown up in and around the restaurant. From our kids to our grandkids, each generation has left its mark here. Our recipes are family secrets, passed down and perfected over the years, and our hospitality reflects the love and care we put into everything we do. When you walk into The Chicken Barn, you’re not just a customer—you’re part of our extended family. That sense of belonging is what sets us apart.

Do you source any ingredients locally? If so, how does that influence your menu?

Absolutely. Randy makes regular trips to the local market to handpick the freshest produce. We’re firm believers that you can’t get the same quality from a box. Fresh, locally sourced tomatoes, greens, and other ingredients make all the difference in our salads and sandwich toppings. This commitment to quality is just one of the ways we ensure that every meal we serve is the best it can be. Supporting local farmers and businesses is important to us because it’s a way to give back to the community that’s supported us for 46 years.

Do you have a favorite customer story or moment that stands out?

There are so many memories, but one of the most heartwarming aspects of running The Chicken Barn is seeing generations of families come through our doors. Some of our current employees are the children and grandchildren of our earliest customers and employees! It’s amazing to watch those connections grow and evolve over time.

The Chicken Barn isn’t just a restaurant—it’s a gathering place. Generations have come here to share meals, celebrate milestones, and connect over Southern classics made just right. The recipes? Family secrets. The vibe? Laid-back and full of love. Whether you're a regular or a first-timer, you'll feel like part of the family the moment you walk in.
