As the days get longer and the weather warms up, there’s no better time to explore all the things that make Smithfield such a fun and vibrant place to live. From trails along the river to family-friendly recreation just minutes from home, this season is full of ways to get outside, get active, and connect with your community.
Neuse Riverwalk: Where Nature, Fun, and a Little Adventure Come Together
If you’re someone who loves fresh air, river views, and a good walking trail, the Neuse Riverwalk might just become your favorite spot in Smithfield. This peaceful path along the Neuse River links right up with the Buffalo Creek Greenway, making it a great place for everything from early morning jogs to after-dinner strolls or weekend bike rides.
But the Riverwalk is just the beginning—there are more greenways and parks nearby that are perfect for exploring. Here are a few favorites:
Buffalo Creek Greenway - This 2.9-mile paved trail kicks off at Town Commons and winds along creeks and the river. It connects to Smithfield Community Park, so you’re steps away from playgrounds, picnic tables, and open green space. Fun fact: this trail is part of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail, which spans all the way across North Carolina.
Sam’s Branch Greenway (Clayton) - Just a short drive away, this 1.25-mile path is ideal for walkers and cyclists. It even features public art along the route, adding a creative twist to your workout. Plus, it links to the Clayton River Walk, making it a great spot for a weekend detour.
Clayton River Walk on the Neuse - This peaceful 4-mile stretch runs right along the river and is part of the East Coast Greenway—a massive trail system from Maine to Florida. It connects into Wake County’s greenways too, giving you plenty of room to roam.
Neuse River Greenway Trail - Ready for a longer ride? Head north to this 34.6-mile paved trail running through Raleigh and Wake County. With tons of scenic spots and rest areas, it’s perfect for serious cyclists or anyone wanting to stretch their legs for a few hours.
Together, these greenway trails make it easy to stay active, explore new spots, and enjoy everything the outdoors has to offer—right here in Smithfield and just beyond. The Buffalo Creek Greenway, in particular, anchors this system in Smithfield and will connect directly to Local70’s community trail system—offering even more ways for residents and visitors to get outside and stay active.

This summer, take full advantage of the opportunity to Explore, one of the building
pillars of Local70. Whether you’re walking the Buffalo Creek Greenway or venturing into neighboring trails, each path is a reminder that Smithfield is more than just a place to live—it’s a place to connect, move, and enjoy the natural beauty that surrounds you.
